Psalm 1:6 | He Knows The Way

(Jump here to get to the beginning of this mini-series on Psalm 1)

Psalm 1:6 ESV says, “for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.”

Righteousness is important. As much as I would emphasize grace as the means to salvation, I cannot relinquish the call to holiness. God is pleased with righteous living, and honest living leads to a life of blessing.

Psalm 1 is a simple passage. It outlines to cost of wickedness and the reward of righteousness.

Here at the end, we see what might be the greatest blessing of righteousness: knowing God.

Psalm 1:6 says that God knows the righteous. God knows every little movement, the slightest desire, and the smallest project. How amazing is it to think about being the object of God’s affection? How great is it to realize that God is familiar with the life of the righteous people? Living in righteousness is an invitation to know the Lord. If we want to know what that looks like, we can go back to verse one.

Still, the warning of wickedness remains. I believe we can biblically claim that God will come one day to judge all humanity and that some will spend eternity in hell because of their sin, wickedness, and evil works. However, it seems like this verse is implying something slightly different. If wickedness is an emptiness or perversion within our hearts, then we can expect nothing more than more emptiness and perversion. Ultimately, the paths and plans of the wicked come to nothing. They perish.

Aside from the very real judgment on the last day, I wonder if the thought of an empty life is enough to kick our hearts into gear this morning. Whatever cost is associated with righteousness is worth the price to live a purposeful and eternal life in the presence of God.

Amen.
