Meditating On God’s Peace

When Isaiah prophesied about the coming Messiah in Isaiah 9:7 (ESV), he said that “Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end.” God’s peace is unmistakably powerful. It is established on the earth through the government and leadership of Jesus Christ.

There will be many interpretations of this ancient prophecy. Some take it to mean a literal kingdom government on the earth with Jesus physically as their leader. Others have determined that Isaiah is referring to a general or spiritual kingdom that comes through the church as they reconcile with the world and creation.

Truthfully, we will never know how the end times will unfold until we get there. There are many believers from every school of thought, faithfully seeking the scriptures and preparing the way for the bride to be ready. I am thankful for those people.

One thing is certain. Wherever the kingdom of God comes, peace is established. God is peace, just like He is love.

There is one word that I want us to meditate on today as we ponder what God’s peace is like. The word is increase.

Peace is often understood as the absence of conflict. It is a state we strive to maintain or implement. After years of war and conflict, we might say, “finally, we are at peace.” But God doesn’t stop there. His peace increases and expands. Wherever God shows up, there is an ongoing elevation of peace.

In John 14:27 (ESV), Jesus promised peace to his disciples saying, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”

Receive his ever-increasing peace today. Leave behind fear and a troubled heart.

My Prayer For You

Father, would you open our hearts and minds to the reality of your gift of peace. I ask that you would send a renewal of peace over everyone who reads this devotional today. Thank you that your peace increases in our hearts as we abide in your presence.

Amen.
