From Where?

Psalm 121:1-2 ESV says, “I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”

As much as we may like the idea of trusting in the Lord, living in dependence is no easy task. This verse is one of those passages that jump off the page and make for good devotional writing (read this prompt from June 18, 2021). If you spend enough time following Jesus, you’ll most likely hear this verse.

I’m glad it is well known. We sing it in songs, read it during church, and print it on Hobby Lobby signs. Of course, our help comes from the Lord!

Today we must sincerely ask this question again: from where does my help come?

Are there other sources of help you are looking to today? Are there other areas of comfort that you are clinging to? Is there another voice or counsel that you are listening to?

There is a simple exercise I am inviting you to try today. Just like the Israelites would sing this song of ascent on their way to Jerusalem, we can look “up” today to the Lord.

After reading this prompt, close your eyes and look up to heaven. Confess that your only help comes from the Lord. Acknowledge his ability to provide and deliver you by declaring that you believe he is the Lord who made heaven and earth. Even if you are sure you already believe this, try this anyway. Listen for God’s voice, and be open to his leading.

As we surrender and simplify our faith, he speaks, strengthens, and encourages us.

From where does your help come?
