PSALM 45:8 | GLORIOUS KING

Psalm 45:8 ESV says, “Your robes are all fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia. From ivory palaces stringed instruments make you glad.”

Christians seem to view God frequently from the lens of friend and savior. We see Jesus depicted Sunday after Sunday as the Good Shepherd, the man who got dust on his feet, the humble servant. This is, of course, an excellent view of God.

On the other hand, many believers have seen God depicted as an angry and wrath-filled judge. While God is certainly powerful, and we should have a holy reverence (also called the fear of the Lord), we can misunderstand God’s heart if we only see him in divine power.

I love verses like Psalm 45:8 because they describe God elegantly and gloriously. Sometimes it is good to see God for who he is: beautiful, divine, excellent, and royal.

Seeing him this way makes it all about him and not us.

Maybe we don’t see the point in a verse like this. Sure, it is good poetry, but what does this have to do with my relationship with God? How does this verse shape my journey of faith?

It isn’t practical. It doesn’t necessarily convict or encourage us. It just is.

And that’s okay. God is beautiful and full of splendor. His beauty is so compelling that the most excellent gifts are brought to him. Beautiful music is played before him. How wonderful is this? I wonder how you respond to his beauty? Scriptures like this help us build a rightful image of an unseen God. As you meditate on his beauty, are you compelled to give him worship through gifts and offerings?

You are invited to see God in his glory today, just as he is. Recognize that he is not just a powerful force.

He is a magnificent king.
