With My Whole Heart

“With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments!”
Psalm 119:10 (ESV)

We often overestimate the enthusiasm of our faith. The secret place of prayer is an essential building block to a life of humble devotion to God.

There are many Christian environments where we can experience spiritual renewal. Everything from your church small group to the Christian concert revolves around growing the believer in Christlikeness. Engaging with our faith is more accessible than we might realize in these curated contexts.

All the deeper habits and thoughts creep back in when we step outside of these spaces. When the service ends and everyone heads home, we all step back into the “real world,” where the depth of our faith is truly tested.

I think about what significance these mundane moments of prayer can have in our lives. Sure, they aren’t often as exciting as joining other believers in songs of praise, but they are still formative places of spiritual growth.

A prayer like Psalm 119:10 is an excellent call to worship in the corporate setting. It unifies the body around coming before God with sincerity and passion. In the secret place of prayer, it becomes a spiritual filter.

When you turn to seek God wholeheartedly, what is lacking? What parts of your heart recoil at the thought of praising God? Where are the cloudy spots in your heart that aren’t aligned with the word of God?

If we only engage with God in the public spaces of faith, we might not notice these hidden parts in our hearts. When we seek God in the secret place of prayer, we learn to identify where our hearts are hesitant to surrender. When we only worship and seek God at church, we neglect the slow and delicate work of surrender that only happens in the secret place of prayer.

Today, you are invited to step away from the busyness of life and pray this prayer of faith. “God, I want to seek you with my whole heart. Show me every spot that resists your truth. Keep me from wandering from your commands!”
