None Besides You

“Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.”

Psalms 73:25

The journey of knowing and loving God eventually comes to the place where you throw your hands in the air in amazement—God, you are enough! This is the place where faith becomes real. When we confess that God is our one desire, we start to see the beauty of God’s design for our lives.

We’ve all asked ourselves in our soul whether we might find a source of life and happiness apart from God. We’ve all explored other ideologies, practices, and perhaps different forms of faith. Some walk away from faith in God completely, motivated by doubt or pushed out by pain. Most others are exploring the idea that maybe faith in God is compatible with the desire for other things. What are these other things? They could be the sins we try to justify. They could be idols of politics or culture. They could be strongholds of fear, pride, or lust that we can’t shake.

Whatever the barrier, this truth always cuts through. “Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.” As we wander and search (and we all do), this powerful truth remains constant. God is patient and good, desiring that all would choose him. He reveals himself to us, but we cannot know him fully until we confess that he is the singular desire of our hearts.

Not in heaven. Not on the earth. There is nothing I desire besides you, Lord. Meditate on the desires you have put before God. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you lay those burdens and idols down. Receive the invitation to know that God is desire your heart was created for.

God, you are our desire.
