Meditate On God’s Greatness
Psalm 135:5 ESV says, “For I know that the Lord is great, and that our Lord is above all gods.”
The enemy often works against us in small, repetitive ways. While the prince of darkness and destruction will twist any tragic circumstance for evil, his strategies are typically employed in subtle whispers, hidden seeds, and tiny footholds.
One day, we can wake up and realize that we bought into a bigger lie than we thought. Discontentment led to complaining, which stirred up hopelessness. Hopelessness turned to anger and resentment, and soon, a root of bitterness took hold of our hearts. What can we do to break such a cycle?
The heaviest baggage accumulates slowly over time. It takes the truth of God’s word and the power of his Spirit to break the bonds of oppression.
Freedom might seem impossible, but when we begin to see God's power and greatness, hope can blossom. Setting our sights on God's greatness puts a crack in the wall between us and hope so we can see the light of freedom again. We can’t encounter God’s greatness and remain in doubt and deception. The name of the Lord is higher. The name of the Lord is a tower of refuge.
To seek God’s greatness in a place of uncertainty and bondage is to see the power of prayer. When we pray through the scriptures in faith, miracles break out. God is the Lord above all gods, and nothing can change that. Prayers of wonder preserve our hearts from deception. Our hearts will not bow to a lesser god in the presence of the Lord.
If we can buy into small seeds of deception, how much greater is the reward when can we cultivate the truth of God’s word? Continually coming before God in his word is the discipline of preparing our hearts to be good soil for the planting of God’s truth.
Come before God and open your heart. Ask him to help you. Put the burdens and brokenness you feel before his throne and then declare, “I know that the Lord is great and that our Lord is above all gods.” Recognize that this prayer has little to do with you and everything to do with God. When you pray the scriptures, you don’t have to stand on your own understanding. You can stand on the rock which is God’s word. Watch as the power of sin and darkness fades in the light of his glory.
