Our Inheritance
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,”
When we look at all the achievements we can go after on the earth, they pale in comparison to the heavenly reward that awaits those who fear the Lord. David said it best in Psalm 16:5-6, saying, “The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.”
The power of abiding daily is that while others busy themselves gaining material wealth, prestige, and honor, the people of God are going after heavenly treasures. Indeed, we are becoming fit to receive the eternal reward that Christ Jesus has prepared for us.
The rewards of the earth are valuable, pleasurable, and exciting, but they are temporal. The most lavish vacation will not compete with a moment in the courts of the Glorious One. No, God is calling his people to “an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading,”
This is the reward and inheritance we long for.
What’s more, we delight in the taste of glory we experience now in the time between his resurrection and his return. The beauty of this time of history is that we have the Good News to bring hope to our souls, our families, and as a message to those around us, but we are still waiting expectantly for the full manifestation of God’s kingdom. That is why we pray that his kingdom would come and that his will would be done. We are looking ahead to what will come.
When we look ahead, we see that Jesus is holding our heavenly inheritance by his power and love. He has gone to prepare the way, and nothing can alter, steal, or corrupt that everlasting promise.
Today we have an invitation to quickly and wholeheartedly turn our attention away from the earthly hopes that compete with the heavenly hope we have. I urge you to pause in this moment and meditate on the words of Peter. Consider how priceless and glorious our inheritance is in Christ, and contemplate the grace we have been given to be able to receive such a gift.
Let the mixture of joy and longing for this gift and sorrow for the ways we have betrayed God’s grace stir us to greater surrender and purer devotion.
Jesus, you are my reward.
