Surrounded With Faithfulness

O Lord God of hosts, who is mighty as you are, O Lord, with your faithfulness all around you?
— PSALM 89:8

This verse always draws me in with its imagery. Whenever I read it, I immediately have pictures of the throne room of God and visions of this faithful God centered in the frame. His glory shines all around him. There, as a friend or a guard, faithfulness is swirling around him, magnetized to his very nature.

God’s faithfulness is one of the central traits that make him God. God has never in all of history failed to be faithful to his word. Even before the world began, God possessed and operated from the same glory, majesty, goodness, and love that he does today.

It should be a jaw-dropping revelation that we encounter. God’s perfect faithfulness is what sets him apart as eternally divine.

It is also what contrasts humanity and divinity so drastically. We forsake God in a breath—before we even realize it. Hosea 6:4 ESV describes the state of Judah’s heart before God, saying, “Your faithfulness is like a morning mist. Your faithfulness is like the dew that goes away early in the morning.”

Even if we manage to maintain integrity on our own, it is like the morning mist fading at the first sight of sunlight. Only God has the power to be completely faithful and true, so we must learn to depend on him to help and guide us.

There is more. Not only is God perfectly faithful, surrounded by integrity and honor, but his faithfulness is channeled into his steadfast and everlasting love toward those who fear him. As sons and daughters of God, we are recipients of this faithful care and help.

God has promised many times in many ways throughout the scripture and directly through his voice that he will carry us through this life and bring us into glory. Knowing that we lack the ability apart from his spirit to remain faithful, but that God stands alone as eternally steadfast, how will we engage with him in prayer and by abiding throughout our day?

As a helper, we have an invitation from Psalm 107:43 ESV. It says, “Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things; let them consider the steadfast love of the LORD.”
