What Is The Secret Place?
“But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray.”
What comes to your mind when you read or hear someone say “the secret place”? I imagine each of us would answer this question in a variety of ways. There is no one definitive way to define the secret place, but we can catch a glimpse into what the secret place was to Jesus.
To Jesus, the secret place was anywhere he could go to be alone to fellowship with his father. It was not about a specific location. It was about a specific connection.
It was anywhere Jesus went to hear what his father was saying and see what his father was doing. In John 5:19, Jesus says, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.” Again in John 5:30, Jesus says, “I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.”
Jesus understood that apart from being intimately connected to and dependent on the father he was unable to do anything. Through this, he shows us what the secret place is. He shows us that we were created for the secret place. He shows us we were created to regularly withdraw to be with the father because we are dependent on him and his every word. He shows us that withdrawing to the secret place to connect with the father is the only way we will ever say or do anything fruitful.
The next few prompts that I write will consist of answering two questions: 1.) Why does daily withdrawing to the secret place matter? 2.) What are a few things we can do while in the secret place?
Take a moment to invite God to increase your understanding of the secret place and his purpose for it. Invite God to help you daily withdraw to the secret place.
The Father is waiting in the secret place for you. Will you take time to go and be with him today?
