Jeremiah 29:13 ESV says, “You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.”
The search for God is central to the life of the Christian. God is an unseen God that we are invited to encounter through his Spirit, but sometimes it is hard to discern his presence. There are certainly times when it is easy, but perhaps more often, there are times when it is hard. To seek God sounds easy enough, but there are many risks involved in showing up to meet with an invisible God.
Our pursuit of knowing God is built not on the fact that we want to encounter God but that he wants to encounter us. Our seeking is in response to the fact that he has made himself discoverable. We seek God because we love him, and something foundational happens when we lean toward his heart, but ultimately we only get to seek because we are invited. That is why for months, I would call this devotional the Daily Invitation.
Today’s invitation is to seek God wholeheartedly.
I keep coming back to this simple truth that often, the only thing in the way of encountering God is ourselves. Do you come to God with a closed-off heart? Are you showing up to pray with Facebook or Instagram open in the background? Have you shut off the noise and postured yourself to hear? Understandably, not everyone has the same ability to set aside time to be with God. I didn’t realize how precious the years directly after college were for the space they gave me to spend time with Jesus.
Wholehearted devotion is a choice. We’ve all seen someone perform or play a sport that didn’t have their heart in it. Maybe you’ve watched a colleague or friend lose their passion for their work. It’s different.
Today I want to call you to pause and look at your heart. Are you open? Are you putting all your attention on God, or is something getting in the way? Ask God to show you how to move into a place of seeking him with all your heart. Try opening up for a moment and see if his promise stands true and you experience more of his presence, truth, and freedom in your life.
