Psalm 86:5 | Call On God
Psalm 86:5 ESV says, “For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you.”
The message for today is that the best possible time to turn to God is right now. Psalm 86:5 shows us who God is and how to get close to him.
God is good. His very nature is good and faithful. This is what makes him God! How could he be God if there was something good that existed outside of him? All good things come from him and reflect his heart and design. I’m so thankful that we serve a good God.
God is forgiving. His design is built on grace and mercy, even in his judgments. He extends forgiveness because he is a God of restoration and renewal. Remember that from the beginning of the Bible, he showed mercy and forgiveness to Adam and Eve in the garden. Although they disobeyed, God still blessed them. He was still their God.
God abounds in steadfast love. What fuels his goodness and drives his heart of restoration? His faithful love. God leaves no secrets about why he is the way he is. He shows us repeatedly through the scriptures that his heart is filled with love. It is a kind of love that goes deeper than we could imagine. It is steadfast in a way that we can’t comprehend.
Yet all these characteristics of God are aimed at encountering his people. Each of these attributes of God are directed at bringing God’s people into his story of freedom, life, and blessing.
The invitation is to call on God. Recognize this morning that goodness, forgiveness, and steadfast love are your inheritance in God. Don’t wait a moment to call on his name. He is a gracious God. No matter where you are in your faith journey, we can count on the fact that God is ready to bring us closer to his heart.
In case you doubted your worthiness of God’s grace, I’ll leave you with this verse from Romans 8:1 ESV, which says, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
