Psalm 89:6 | Who Is Like The Lord?

Psalm 89:6 ESV says, “For who in the skies can be compared to the Lord? Who among the heavenly beings is like the Lord,”

Would you ask yourself these ancient questions today?

When we think of great people throughout history, we marvel. Even the greatest have another human to rival them.

I see comparison posts from time to time on social media between basketball stars Michael Jordan and Lebron James. These two athletes clearly rise to the top of the greatest basketball players of all time, but even here, there is a competition. People can propose worthy arguments for why either is the greater player.

Not so with God.

As we ponder beauty, majesty, and power, we see only God as the greatest. The psalmist challenges us to consider the wonders of the universe. Indeed, scripture tells us that there are glorious and magnificent heavenly beings that would stun us with their glory. Perhaps we can imagine angels, cherubim, and seraphim. Divine beings filled with light. Yet their beauty fades as soon as we catch a glimpse of God. God is the most glorious of all.

One look at his brilliant light disposes of the brightest flash of the sun. One moment of his peace redefines rest and safety. One revelation of his truth surpasses the deepest pondering of the human mind.

I’m not trying to be dramatic, but I am only trying to express how unattainably glorious God is.

Yet comparisons are not enough because God cannot be compared. Instead, I want to invite you into a meditation built on asking who can compare to God. Who is like the Lord? Let not just your mind wander in imagination, but open your spirit to reach for the heart of God. Reach past every competing (and ultimately inferior) desire to see that there is nothing like God.
