Lamentations 3:25 | Good For The Soul

Lamentations 3:25 ESV says, “The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him.”

The Lord is good all the time. Goodness is his nature and identity. We can praise him for his goodness and meditate on his character, but how do we get into the flow of this goodness? Lamentations shows us that the key is to wait on the Lord.

Waiting often goes against the grain of our desires. If we face a problem, we want to fix it. If we have a need, we want to meet it. If the thing we want is urgent, then there seems to be no need to wait. At the very least, we want to take some kind of action.

Yet God’s goodness comes to those who wait for him.

Remember when King Saul failed to wait on the prophet Samuel to come and offer the priestly sacrifice in 1 Samuel 13? His lack of patience ultimately cost him the kingdom, but at the moment, he missed out on the goodness of God to lead him to victory.

Failing to wait on God might not lead to such a disaster, but a pattern of running ahead of God can certainly lead to such consequences. God’s ways are always better than ours. He has more wisdom, resources, and power to accomplish what is good in our lives than we do! When we take the risk of laying down our solutions and waiting for his answer, we discover his goodness.

Yet God’s goodness is not just for the purpose of achieving outcomes in our lives. He aims to enrich our souls.

Learning to wait for God will result in a healthy soul and a life surrounded by God’s goodness.
