Where Is Your Treasure?

In Matthew 6:21 (ESV), Jesus says, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” He is talking about where we store our treasures, in heaven or on the earth. Every day we have the opportunity in invest in either place, but only one is eternal.

I marvel at the way surrender is woven into every part of our walk with Jesus. To store treasures in heaven means to miss out on earthly opportunities—even good opportunities. I have a friend who walked away from an incredible job a few years ago to spend time in prayer and surrender. She is still in that season. You might say that was a reckless decision, but I can testify that the fruit of her life has increased. In exchange for a salary, she received an anointing and an awareness of God’s glory.

In our life, we have turned down opportunity after opportunity to abide in Jesus. I have been tempted to seek greater influence or work to be better established in my eyes, but time and time again God reminds me that building history with him is more eternally valuable than momentary reprieve.

Of course, we have needs, but God always provides what we need when we fixate on storing treasure in heaven. Today’s challenge is to walk in greater surrender when it comes to how we invest our time, talents, and treasures. Where to we want the storehouse to be full? Heaven or on earth?

I am reminded of what Paul says in 2 Corinthians 4:18 (ESV), “as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.”
