Wait For The Lord

Psalm 27:14 (ESV) says, “Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!” Psalm 27 is a great chapter to read whenever you are facing a challenge and need to ground yourself in God’s truth.

David writes about seeking God’s protection and deliverance even as enemies rise on every side. Interestingly, David concludes that his job is to wait for the Lord. God will take care of the enemy, but his job is to remain close to God, minister in God's temple, and wait for God’s deliverance.

That is usually not the answer we are looking for when we are facing a challenge.

I’m sure David would have been content if God either immediately eliminated his enemies or gave him the strength to do so as soon as possible. Instead, David is put in a position of dependency. He looks at the opposition rising all around him and his powerlessness to stop it, and has to choose to worship and trust God all the same.

It is in this place of waiting that we can see how good and present God is. It reminds me of Isaiah 40:31, where it says, “but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength.”

Following Jesus is not about a life of inaction, but when we are afraid or stuck, our first response should be to wait on the Lord. It is an active decision to trust God against what your logical mind tells you must be done. It is an opportunity to worship God instead of rushing into action. It is a chance to give God glory and pursue his heart when you want to pursue solutions and escape.

God is in the waiting. So I encourage you today, “Be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!”

Amen.
