Set Free For Freedom
Galatians 5:1 (ESV) says, “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”
Look at what Christ has done! He has broken the power of sin and death. His resurrection is now our resurrection! When there was nothing more that we could do, Christ came and offered us freedom. We did not deserve it, but God wanted to give us freedom.
Ephesians 1:5 NLT says, “God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.” Again, we are recipients of God’s grace. We are called his Beloved.
This freedom is ours for the taking, but we must learn to abide in the truth. I know that it is hard at times to stay in the truth and remain in freedom. I think that is why Paul encourages us to stand firm in our freedom and not submit to slavery.
Honestly, sometimes it is a bit awkward to stand in our freedom in Christ. Sometimes we do not think we can. Other times, we do not feel worthy of this freedom. It is much easier to submit to the bonds of slavery to sin.
However, when we look at what Christ has done—giving his life as a ransom—we might start to understand the power of our freedom. Our job is not to go and accomplish something with this new freedom. Our job is to stand firm. The works will follow, but in Christ, freedom is for freedom.
Next time it gets hard to stand in freedom (or maybe you are there right now), I encourage you to take these steps.
Look at what Christ has done.
Meditate on the truth of God’s sacrifice and love. Standing in freedom, consider his goodness to you. Ponder his grace!Ask him to help you.
None of us can stand on our own. Asking God to empower us is critical to living in freedom.Give thanks.
Even before you know the outcome. Give thanks to God. This act alone has the power to transform our attitude from fear and scarcity to joy and abundance.
Amen.
