Be Still And Know
Psalms 46:10 (NIV) says. “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
If you want to catch a glimpse of what it looks like when Jesus the King fights your battle, look at this chapter. Psalm 46:6 says, “The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts.”
I'm sure most of us have already heard the verse, "Be still and know," to the point of a cliche. You could probably walk into a Hobby Lobby today and pick up a distressed wood sign to hang in your living room. You’ll find it on journals, t-shirts, and more.
Lean into it this morning anyway.
Don't let the familiarity of a Christian phrase steal the power of its truth.
Most often, this phrase is framed in tranquility. We easily imagine quietness and peace. Perhaps you picture a sunrise or a calming moment in God’s creation. Unfortunately, this verse is the conclusion of a Psalm about war. But maybe this provides an even deeper truth that we need for today.
Walking with Jesus is more than quiet coffee in the morning. What if the command to be still was not about warm-fuzzies, but about awe? What if knowing that he is God was about being amazed at the glory and strength of God?
The message of Psalms 46 is that God will deliver us when we need it, and nothing can stand against him. Part of abiding is setting aside the truth we want to receive to consume the divine truth we need for the day.
Yes, there is a precious and peaceful presence that comes to us in the secret place of prayer. But the emphasis on waiting on the Lord is often about trusting God to deliver us from situations we are powerless against.
There will be times soon that we all need this message. So when we face that trial, our task is to be still and know that he is God.
