Life In Jesus

Romans 6:23 (ESV) says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” I’m sure that I have read this verse more times than I can count. Most Christians could quote it to answer a Sunday School question, but the truth of this verse is no less powerful today than the first time we heard it.

When the things we see constantly become mundane, we can lose sight of their power. I remember one time sitting around the make-shift fire pit by Life Compass Church. I sat around that fire with so many people over the years, encountering God and sharing from our hearts.

One time I stopped everyone, and we looked at each other. I realized that this moment had become ordinary for us, even though the content of our conversation could be life-changing to an outsider. A sense of awareness came over us as we sat there reflecting on this reality, and it helped us remember the importance of what God was doing in our midst.

In the same way, it is easy to forget that the most important word in Romans 6:23 is Jesus.

Sin leads to death, and surrendering to God leads to life. We know this! But this simple reality is radical, ground-breaking, and astonishing.

We do not always have to learn something new when we come to the scriptures for our devotional. What if today we paused like I did those years ago and recognized that, while this verse may be mundane, it proclaims the revelation of salvation in Jesus!

What if we pressed beyond the head knowledge of this verse. Could we move beyond this being a salvation equation and get into the wonder of Jesus? He is the one we are after.

Amen.
