Bless The Lord

Psalm 103:1 (ESV) says, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name!” This verse is reminder to us this morning of the importance of putting our attention on the Lord.

I always notice that in this verse, David seems to be instructing his own soul in how it should behave. Many times our soul and our inner world is not on board with the spiritual posture we are attempting to take. Sometimes I think we expect our soul to be more agreeable than it is. Our soul has to learn the ministry of blessing the Lord just like it has to learn to trust the Lord and know the Lord.

Just because our soul will not engage in prayer our worship (by soul I mean our inner being, the emotions, desires, and will), does not mean something is terribly off. As I have been sharing lately, it takes time for all members of our being to get on board with worship and holy living.

That is why I love how David commands his soul to get in line.

If you’re like me, you have had moments where you know that you want to follow God and be closer to him, but for some reason your inner world is not catching up. Can I tell encourage you that this is normal? Most people have not automatically figured out how to bless the Lord at all times like it says in Psalm 34:1.

There is a simple and powerful practice embedded in Psalm 103:1. We have the opportunity to speak to our soul and to our inner world and bring them into alignment with the ministry of praise and worship.

There are times when I know I need to worship or prayer or minister in some way and I do not have the time to wait and see if the rest of me will catch up. Having a mind set on ministering to the Lord and engaging with his Holy Spirit allows us to speak boldly and confidently to our souls, “Bless the Lord!”
