Think About Flowers
Matthew 6:28-29 ESV says, “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.” I love when Jesus invites us into such a simple space of contemplation.
A Simple Invitation
We do not have to think deeply about a dense theological topic to feel like we made it through a successful devotional time. Today, Jesus himself is inviting you to consider the lilies of the field.
Think about flowers.
It is such an elementary assignment with vast implications. Consider their effortless beauty. Who provides for the flowers? Who makes the beautiful? Who designed them to be the way they are? It was God.
God Provides
Jesus says something important next. Matthew 6:30 ESV says, “But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?” It is so easy to get sidetracked in our walk with God when we cannot figure out the tiny details like what to wear. It is important to remember that God fully intends to provide for us as we need it.
The message of this part of Matthew 6 is to not worry about tomorrow. Jesus calls us to trust in a God who cares for even the smallest parts of his creation. When there is not enough food, money, time, or energy, it is important to think about flowers. God never asks us to have it all figured out. He calls us to wait on him to provide for the current day. I do not have to know what next week will bring because God is faithful to me right now.
Of course, we need to be wise and careful stewards of our resources. I am not saying to be reckless in the way we take care of our families, but I am saying that when we feel that we do not have enough and fear creeps in, we can trust in the Lord to provide for us.
We can all benefit and grow from thinking about flowers today. In whatever you will face today, remember that God is a big God, and he is faithful to provide.
