In Our Need

Proverbs 18:10 ESV says, “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.” We have a refuge in the name of the Lord.

I was talking and praying with a friend the other day who was going through a tough time. During our conversation, I began to understand something more about how the Lord relates to us in our time of need.

In Our Need

Jesus is able to engage with us in the rawness and brokenness of our situation. Most of the coping mechanisms we turn to in our hurt are about suppressing our pain or distracting ourselves from our pain. We might give in to something damaging (we all know what our struggles are), or we might try and go for a walk to clear our head or watch TV.

We all have a tolerance for dealing with our pain. When we handle our mess alone, we will eventually need to take a break and do something less intense. I consider that Jesus does not invite us to that. He does something completely different. No longer are we forced to choose between being tormented by our pain or hiding the pain. We get to abide in Christ in our pain.

Trust Him

Jesus does not expect us to leave our wounds at the door. He is the healer. He is a God of understanding, so when we come with our mess, he is able to cover us with compassion and peace.

His name is a strong tower. It is a place the righteous can go and be safe. Safe to rest. Safe to pray. Safe to talk with the Lord. Safe to heal.

God both protects us and restores us. There are a few other scriptures that I will share at the bottom of this post that relate to this message. Right now, I have a sense that someone needs to stop hiding their pain in the presence of God. I’m speaking to myself as well. I want to see God as a strong tower over my life and over my family.

So we run to him today.
