The Peace Of God

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
— Philippians 4:7 ESV

It was late on a fall night after several hours of chapel band practice. I walked out with my drummer (who would later become my brother-in-law), and we talked a bit about where we were spiritually. We had begun to know each other more, and God was doing something in our relationship.

Corey asked me how I was doing, and I had to be honest. I was not okay. Something was off, and I could not seem to find peace. I was stressed, defeated, and anxious.

In typical fashion, Corey politely asked me if he could pray over me, which I, of course, agreed to. He put his hand on my shoulder, and we both closed our eyes. He prayed a few introductory words, but then he just kept softly praying, “peace.”

It was probably 10:30 PM by this time, and there was a light rain falling on us. It was not heavy enough that we needed to go inside, but it was a gentle mist. I’ll never forget that prayer and the sound of the rain against the backdrop of a sleeping college campus. God’s presence met me there, and he surrounded me with peace.

I think about Paul’s description of peace as a guard for our hearts and minds. Corey’s simple prayer was like raising defenses around my inner world. All the chaos and fear began to fade away as the Holy Spirit surrounded me and Jesus defended me from spiritual enemies.

I consider this morning that the absence of peace creates a chaotic environment for our times of prayer. When we cannot find peace, abiding can feel discouragingly defeating. Sometimes we need help getting back on the path of peace.

Jesus, I ask you to send your peace to everyone reading this today. I believe that you have the power to break through every enemy line of chaos, doubt, fear, and shame. You bring the increase of peace. You bring the rain of heaven.

Father, I ask that you surround each of those reading this today with your love. Cover them with your abiding love. Help them to experience your rest and your comfort.

Holy Spirit, I ask that you fill each person reading this today with peace like a dense fog. Open the heavens and shower down comfort, rest, and trust.

Peace.
