Perfect Peace
“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.”
There is nothing better than living in the perfect peace of Jesus.
I remember in 8th grade, I attended a teen camp that marked me in a simple way. I have had summer camps where God wrecked me with his sanctifying presence, but this camp was later and different. I remember sitting in the chapel after one of the services. The worship leader was still strumming away, but most everyone was gone. It was me, a few students, and a few leaders remaining.
I could not leave the room. There was a tangible peace resting on our prayer. I remember deciding at that moment that this is God’s peace is that it is the most beautiful thing ever.
Satan is in the business of lowering our expectations about God. He wants us to avoid promises like Isaiah 26:3 and try to find peace on our own. He capitalizes on every moment of disruption to break confidence in the word of God.
Scripture does not say here that God guarantees peace to anyone who pulls a ticket and gets in line. It says that God sustains peace when we fix our attention on God and put our trust in him.
Such clarity can have a transformational impact on our day-to-day life. When we are facing moments of chaos, we now have a response. We can live from this promise and put our situation before God as we confess our need for him to come and bring peace.
God works in ways we do not always understand, but he is faithful to every promise. I know that it can be challenging to live this way. I also know that we build our faith when we press into promises like these.
It is so exciting when we take a risk by putting a demand on God’s faithfulness and, despite our unbelief, God comes through. These are moments when God builds our faith with encounters of his faithfulness.
God will keep you in peace. You just have to learn to set your attention on him. I do not know how this will play out for each of us, but I know that as we continue in the ministry of beholding him and trusting him, peace will increase in our lives.
God, I thank you for this promise of peace. I pray that you give us the strength and understanding to trust in you today. Captivate us with your beauty and with your presence. Open our spiritual eyes and increase our spiritual discernment so that we can see the increase of your peace in our lives today. Amen.
