You Have Searched Me

O Lord , you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar.
— Psalm 139:1-2 ESV

God knows everything about you, and not just because he is all-knowing and all-wise. Scripture shows us that God intentionally seeks us out. He pays attention to the things we do and say, and even carefully considers our thoughts. His love for us motivates him to seek us out and press in to know us.

Psalm 139 speaks about our identity in God. There are many foundational and healing truths to meditate on from this passage. While he knows the number of the hairs on our head, his knowledge of us is more than information. He knows the number of the stars, and he, “brings out their host by number, calling them all by name” (Isaiah 40:26 ESV). Even though he has such vast knowledge of the universe, Psalm 139:17-18 shows us that his thoughts about each of us are limitless. God, by nature, has infinite knowledge of his creation, but his heart of love drives him to seek to know us personally and intimately.

Throughout scritpure we find passages rightfully calling us to remember God’s greatness. I think of Psalm 29:4 ESV, “The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.” Verses like these remind us that God is a mighty to be feared. Yet his power is only matched by the tenderness of his love.

Everything that Jesus said and did was in unity with the Father and the Holy Spirit as Jacob reminded us the other day from Jesus’s words in John 5. Jesus is the mediator and the bridge between us and God, not just making a way for us to connect to God, but making a way for God to connect with us.

Whenever I think of the secret place, I have to begin at Matthew 6:6 ESV, which says, “But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”

Understand this morning that the Father (in perfect unity with the Son and Holy Spirit), is waiting to encounter you in the secret place today. He has searched you and known you. He knows everything about you, but he is carefully discerning your thoughts from afar to be ready to encounter you in the privacy of your times of prayer.

Seeking God in the secret place begins with the understanding that God is first seeking us. Allow God to speak to you, to find you, and to know you. Thanks for
