The Blessing Of The Lord
“The blessing of the Lord makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.”
God is such a generous God. When he brings a blessing, he brings nothing but blessing into our lives. This proverb reveals the depth of God’s goodness to his people. He is more than an all-powerful God. He is a good God and a father that loves to give good gifts to his children.
In Matthew 7:11 ESV, Jesus says, “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!”
Make no mistake, God is sovereign. He is the ruler of the universe, the creator, and the sustainer of all things. In all reality, he does not have to be a good God. His sheer glory and strength as described in the scriptures would make him worthy of our devotion and service.
He is the God that flooded the earth the split the Red Sea. He sends fire from heaven and stills the storm. He has power over death itself and performs great wonders and signs.
I’ve been contemplating my view of God. When I only see him as loving, gentle, and good, I sometimes have a hard time fitting in his attributes such as strong, powerful, and just. However, when I see him in his majesty I am amazed to discover that his glory is a glory of love and not hatred. I am shocked to learn that he is a father that brings blessing to his children.
In a word, he is meek.
He is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, but he is by no means weak. I think this posture helps us understand the fear of the Lord. Even seeing his love deepens our sense of awe and wonder at who he is. Worship gets simple when we see the creator God in his power accompanied by his love and mercy.
When we receive any blessing from him, we wonder, “How can this God be so good to me?” His blessings are pure blessings that flow from his heart. He does not add sorrow to what he gives for our benefit.
I want to invite you to first meditate on the nature of God. See his glory and goodness intermixed in the complexity of his character so deep we will never search it all out. Then I want you to consider that this God is the God that brings the blessing. He is a Good Father.
