The Strength Of My Heart
“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”
It matters where we find our strength. Today’s post is as much a message of hope as it is a message of conviction. If we are honest, a huge part of our inability to connect to God has to do with the fact that our strength comes from other places. If those sources of strength are rooted in sin or self-sufficiency, they promise renewal, peace, and satisfaction while they lead us to places of emptiness and lack.
Psalm 73 is a psalm of Asaph, and the writer expresses his distress with how those around him treat him. He seems overwhelmed with the seeming futility of righteousness, but he becomes suddenly aware of the power and security that comes from belonging to God. He says in verse 25, “Who have I in heaven but you?”
The message of conviction is that weariness comes when we are double-minded in where our strength comes from. Are we going to turn to our old habits and mindsets when we get weary, or are we going to cling to the cross? When we face a challenge, do we operate in our own strength, or do we lean on Jesus?
The message of hope is that we can hold on to God in every moment. And we should! When we are in need, this verse serves as a lifeline. When we are in plenty, this verse serves as an anchor to keep us humble.
Wherever you are today, I encourage you to meditate on these words. I found it helpful to sit behind a piano and sing the words, “God is the strength of my heart,” for a while. I know that not everyone is musical, but that does not have to hold you back from humming along with a melody (God loves every level of musical ability). For others, it may be better to simply pray these words. You might draw or journal in response to these words. My invitation is to just respond.
Remember that the point of this is not to have it all figured out. The objective is to get the word rooted in our hearts. Whatever we do, it has the power to more closely align our hearts with the promise of God over our hearts.
God is the strength of my heart.
