Satisfied With Goodness
“Blessed is the one you choose and bring near, to dwell in your courts! We shall be satisfied with the goodness of your house, the holiness of your temple!”
Sometimes it is hard to remember that the Psalms were written generations before Jesus came to the earth. These verses were written before the Kingdom of God came, before the Holy Spirit was poured out, before the church multiplied across the earth.
David’s writing here is both directly relevant for the culture and the format of worship from his time, and pertinent to our spirit and truth worship today. Yes, in David’s time, the invitation to come into the courts of the Lord and worship was a truly incredible gift. Yet today, we are invited into the presence of God, to dwell and abide, because of the blood of Jesus and the gift of the Holy Spirit.
When we read this verse, we remember that we are blessed because we are chosen and brought near to the Lord. The New Testament echoes David’s promise.
1 Peter 2:9 ESV says, “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”
Ephesians 2:13 ESV says, “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.”
We are chosen and brought near. While we do not enter the physical courts of the temple, we enter into a spiritual throne room. In this place of worship, we are satisfied with the goodness of his house and the holiness of his temple.
In corporate worship, we set our attention on entering this holy place together, but even now, in the secret place of prayer, you can enter by faith. We enter because we are chosen and brought near.
Pray this prayer with me.
Jesus, I thank you for your precious blood that saves me and sanctifies me forever. I believe that I am a chosen child of God. I believe that you desire to bring me into your presence. Open my eyes and open my heart so that I can live in the glory of your temple. I want to come closer to you and I am open to you.
Amen.
