Day By Day
Psalms 37:18 NLT says, “Day by day the Lord takes care of the innocent, and they will receive an inheritance that lasts forever.”
That is a verse that makes you just say, “wow.”
The character of God is on full display in this verse. Would you enter into this moment of mediation with me?
God is consistent, and he operates on a day-to-day basis, bringing justice to the weak and caring for the innocent. God is also eternal, and he gives everlasting gifts to those who love and fear him. When we think about the Lord, this verse can help us have a rightful image of him. Part of abiding is meditating on God’s nature and contemplating his character. It is asking the question, “Who is this God, anyways?”
As we consider what he is like with our mind, our spirit gets involved, and the Holy Spirit brings deeper understanding. This small exercise can begin a snowball effect in our faith exploration. Giving ourselves fully to one aspect of seeking the Lord inevitably opens up other ways for us to seek him. As our spirit engages, our heart is drawn into the story. We may feel the need to posture our physical bodies differently by kneeling on laying face down on the ground. We might desire to shout, dance, clap our hands, or sing.
Learning to respond to God is critical in so many ways, but most importantly, it is how we grow in intimacy with the Lord. Connecting to God allows us to access a lifestyle of freedom because God is, and always will be, free.
It puts a new meaning on words like, “I want to be close to you.” It reshapes the incentive for learning how to abide. But this verse today means more than a prayer exercise. It carries revelation truth that we need.
God makes a promise that he takes care of the innocent and offers them an everlasting inheritance. The question then becomes, how do I enter into this relationship with God? How do I become innocent and step under his protection?
The answer is embedded in the very same chapter. Psalms 37:5-6 NLT says, "Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you. He will make your innocence radiate like the dawn, and the justice of your cause will shine like the noonday sun."
I can see the Lord faithfully helping each of us as we seek him and trust him. I can see him radiating through us like the sunrise. God longs to be closer to you today. You have the tools to seek him, so what are you waiting for?
