Seeing The God Of Promise

Hebrews 10:23 ESV says, “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.” When we think about it, our confidence in Christ only goes as far as our faith is in him.

God is an unseen God. He is spirit. So it is easy to lose sight of him as a real God and view him as the face of a great religion. Pretty soon, this divine, loving, all-powerful, and all-wise being becomes the conduit for rules and restrictions that make up a religion.

That is not who he is, but it can be how we see him. When we lose our strength of faith, we lose the ability to follow through with obedience, worship in spirit and truth, and receive from God the call he has for our lives. It is why Jesus over and over teaches us that we need to have faith like children to enter the kingdom of God. Without faith, do we even believe God is real at all?

Of course, there is no condemnation for us when we doubt. Paul made that clear in Romans 8. Yet when we live continuously in doubt, we miss out on so much of the kingdom of God.

The writer of Hebrews wrote this verse because there are many things that challenge our hope and faith. The enemy knows that if he can lower the standard for good Christian faith (or remove it altogether), then he can take away our message and claim of eternal hope. Without confidence in who God is, our hope is no more than a statement or idea.

But God’s hope is no concept. It is the real deal. The reason that we live. The most exciting story and the most captivating message ever told: the gospel.

Our directive is to hold fast to our confession of hope, but not blindly with whatever grit we can find. We hold onto hope because the one who promised is faithful. Seeing God rightly as a faithful God leads us to greater measures of faith and hope.

Can you see the one who promised? Maybe you have hurt or doubt that is challenging God as a faithful God. That is okay. God knows how to sort it out for you. He is well-experienced at delivering the truth.

I want to invite you to simply come before the Lord today. Open yourself up to him and ask him to increase your faith and confidence in his word by showing you more of who he is. He is faithful to every promise.
