Learning To Wait

‭‭Psalm‬ ‭62:1-2‬ ‭ESV‬‬ says, "For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken."

Waiting is a spiritual practice that challenges us and pushes us in our faith. The psalmist takes it to a new level, saying that they will wait for God alone.

If you are anything like me, you struggle when the things you want are delayed. And even in the waiting I do, I am not always sure I am waiting on God alone.

For instance, today, I just found out that my new laptop for grad school will be delayed another 3-4 weeks from the already 3-4 weeks initially delayed.

It seems trivial, but it can draw my attention away from trusting and into undue urgency.

Of course, the case of the rouge laptop pales in comparison to the kind of challenges the writer of Psalm 62 was facing. We, too, face more significant trials and challenges throughout our life. I find that God consistently uses the minor difficulties and inconveniences to prepare us to handle greater adversity down the road.

Today we have an invitation to practice waiting on the Lord. Perhaps you want to commit these verses to memory for future reference. There will undoubtedly come a challenge where our only hope is to wait on the Lord.

When we practice abiding, God prepares us for things we could never foresee.

I want you to think about just one challenge you have today. Practice setting it before God. Practice waiting by reading our key verse out loud. Pay attention to what goes on in your heart. Are you resisting? Are you relieved?

It may seem a bit absurd or over-the-top if you read verse two. I'm disappointed about my computer, but life is in no mortal danger because of that delay. Remember, we are practicing.

Odds are at least a few of you reading this need to hold fast to God, who is our rock. I know that the Lord is with you. For others who may not be facing a challenge, the call is to meditate and wait. Perhaps one day, you will face a greater challenge, then the words of this psalm will mean something entirely new.

Will you practice this with me? I'm curious, what are you doing to wait on the Lord? Leave a comment or send a text message to Abiding Daily.
