Keep In Step
Galatians 5:25 ESV says, “If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.” Today I want to remind you that we are not called to have a master plan for our personal holiness.
Our relationship with God is not dependent on our ability to present God with an outline of the steps we will take to be better Christians. God is not waiting on us to prove to him that we can handle this life according to his rules and restrictions. It is, in ways, the opposite! Remember from yesterday that the path to living in God’s power is boasting in weakness.
Similarly, the path to freedom is to walk step by step in the spirit. God is more interested in being present with you at this moment than he is about hearing your plans for the future or your reflections on the past.
He is the God of yesterday and tomorrow, but he operates as the God of now. Our invitation right now is to keep in step with the Spirit.
That means that God is actively moving and working at this moment. We have the opportunity to acknowledge that and enter into it as best we can, or we can ignore it and live according to our own wisdom.
God is so good that whenever we call on him, he answers. Even if we have been leaving him on voicemail, he will speak the truth to us when we finally pick up the phone. Paul says that if you have a connection with God—if you live according to the Spirit—do not forget to engage with God.
Paul speaks to our tendency to receive the freedom that comes from the Spirit and then try to live it out in our own strength. God does not desire a touch-and-go relationship with us. He wants an abiding relationship!
So if we have God’s phone number, let’s keep up with what he is saying and doing. Just because he is merciful and good does not mean that we should take advantage of his gentleness. If God gives grace when we turn back to him, how much more grace is available in the everyday connection?
The invitation is there, and we have a chance to respond to it today. Begin in this moment by acknowledging God’s presence in your life. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you what is hindering your connection to him, and keep walking in the Spirit.
