I Trust In You

Psalm 31:14 ESV says, “But I trust in you, O Lord; I say, ‘You are my God.’”

If you read the first part of Psalm 31, you get a clearer picture of what the writer means when they say they will trust in God. The context is certainly no vacation. Amid trial and danger, the writer says they will trust the Lord.

I love this verse because it gives us two straightforward tools.

First, it shows us that there is no ideal time to trust God. In good situations and bad circumstances, we can trust in God. Along with this point is the fact that we do not have to feel perfectly ready to trust God to begin to trust him.

It may be when we are most uncertain about our ability to trust God that we are trusting him the most. In any other condition, our trust in God is being supplemented by our reliance on something else. For example, it is easy to trust God with my finances when my bank account is full, but when I am at the end of my means, I am actually trusting in the Lord.

That does not mean that we cannot trust God when we have abundance and safety, but it does mean that the cost of trusting is much lower than in a time of need.

Secondly, we are given a simple prayer to guide our inner being into agreement with trust. The prayer is, “You are my God.”

Consider how powerful this statement is, even in its simplicity. To declare that God is your God is an audacious claim with eternal implications. Like Romans 8:31 ESV says, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” Sometimes the situation seems bigger than God; how transformative can this prayer be for our hearts as we learn to trust God?

Praying this prayer will undoubtedly confront any doubt we are carrying, but it will also give our souls an anchor to hold on to and press forward.

I do not know if this devotional is one you needed today or one you need to pocket for tomorrow, but I know that God is worthy of our trust, and he can deliver us.

May God be with you.

Amen.
