Precious Blood

I am thankful this morning because I am filled with longing to know more about who God is and what his word says. This is not always the case. Feelings like this come and go, but I am so grateful for the word today. I pray that you experience the same.

1 Peter 1:18-19 ESV says, “You were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.”

I want us to remember the power of the blood of Christ. It is no token item. It is no jewel or possession. It is not a collectible or a priceless work of art. It is the imperishable and redemptive power of Christ.

Clearly, we do not need to physically touch the blood of Jesus to experience salvation. A deeper study of the writings of books such as Hebrews gives greater clarity to the power of Jesus’ sacrifice. If you so desire, you can spend time researching more on this.

Consider one thing this morning. It is not that God purchased our freedom out of his great riches. He did not buy up our sins with heavenly collateral. He did not withdraw a massive payout from his storehouses to make even with our deficiencies. The debt of our sin was greater than a check could cover.

God did not just use a cosmic buyout from death. Instead, he ransomed us with his blood.

This morning, can you see that the cost for Christ to redeem his people was in giving up himself? As Peter said, we lived in futile ways inherited through the generations. But God, through his Son, brought us into a new inheritance—the family of God.

The work of the cross is a great mystery and truly a wonder—more than can be expressed in a morning devotional. Still, I think it is fitting for us to focus on the blood of Christ and meditate on its significance.

Spend a few moments pondering God’s grace in your life and thank him for the blood shed for your ransom.

Amen.
