He Is Peace

This morning I was listening to the book of Micah, and this verse caught my attention. Micah 5:4-5 says, “And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth. And he shall be their peace.”

Do you need peace today? I believe that Micah 5 is speaking of Jesus Christ, the messiah. So our hearts should be filled with joy and wonder at the thought of this prophecied peace living within us.

Do you remember this verse? John 14:27 (NIV) says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Jesus gave a promise of peace that we can receive and live in.

There are many other verses about God being our peace. A simple web search will reveal these, and perhaps another verse will be more fitting for what God has for you today. Either way, let us fix our attention on God our peace today.

Learning to receive his peace cannot come without knowing to receive his rest. That does not mean that we have to take the day off or lay down for a few hours. It means that we come into agreement with rest in our souls. We can be working through the whole day from a place of peace and rest. In this way, living in peace agrees with living from rest.

God will call us to challenging tasks, but his desire is not that we would face these things in fear or chaos. Jesus never hid the fact that following him meant welcoming trials, but he often spoke to his disciples with encouraging words about living in peace.

That shows me that the peace of God has not as much to do with a certain feeling, location, or time of day and more to do with our connection to the one who is peace.

Jesus is inviting us into his peace today. Will you enter into that rest?
