That Day

Psalm 118:24 ESV says, “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

I love this simple instruction from Psalm 118. It is an eternally regenerating command. As surely as the sun rises in the morning, we will give thanks for the day that God has given us.

Some days this will be easy, other days, it will be challenging, but the command remains the same. Of course, there will be days of great tragedy, and mourning will be necessary. It is in these days of sorrow that we remember the promise of Lamentations 3:22-24, which says, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. ‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘therefore I will hope in him.’”

This is an excellent general command for every day of our lives, but perhaps there is a greater “day” that the psalmist references. It is a day that will transform every day to follow: resurrection day. If we read more of the context surrounding Psalm 118:24, we read a larger story. Psalms 118:22-24 NIV says, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes. The Lord has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad.”

Maybe you remember this verse from being referenced repeatedly in the New Testament talking about Jesus. That day was when Christ (the cornerstone) was rejected by the Jews (the builders), and in his victory over death and the grave became the cornerstone. Perhaps this gives renewed meaning to the well-known Chorus “Cornerstone” by Hillsong.

Biblical prophecy has a unique way of tying together wisdom for today with a greater divine truth. Yes, we should rejoice in this day that God has made, but remember that our freedom to rejoice flows from the sacrifice of Christ Jesus on the cross and his subsequent triumph!

We see these truths together, remembering that Christ is ultimately the worthy one and his gift of salvation flows into every moment of our lives.

That is a day that the Lord has made.

This is a day that the Lord has made.

We are grateful.
