A Seed of Faith

Nahum 1:7 ESV says, “The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him.”

This morning, I searched for verses about the Lord being good. Unsurprisingly, pages of results came up because the goodness of the Lord is a central part of God’s character. Of course, dozens of psalms talk about the goodness of God, but this verse stuck out to me.

In Nahum 1:7, the goodness of the Lord is tied to the truth that he is a refuge in times of trouble. We can have the assurance that God we deliver us because we know that he is good.

The second half of this verse stood out to me today. It says that God knows those who take refuge in him. I’m struck with the intimacy and intentionality it communicates about who God is to us.

He is not just some powerful being that allows himself to be a refuge and shelter out of his good character. No, he is a father who knows the names of those who look to him for help. Can you believe today that as you look at him for help, he is looking at you?

The goodness of God extends beyond mere goodwill. He is invested in the deliverance of his people, keeping an attendance sheet as we each run to his shelter.

I think of this crucial verse from Proverbs 18:10 ESV, which says, "The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.”

I think the Lord wants to remind some people this morning that he sees them as they take refuge in him. We can be sure that God knows our situation in total—more than we know it ourselves. He knows what we need and how to break through this season in victory. We now must take refuge in him.

Hard as it may be, we can lean into his grace and ask him to be our strength. This is the soil of trust. As we sow seeds of surrender into the earth, God waters it with his faithfulness and goodness. Every seed of faith sown will grow into a tree bearing fruit that testifies to God’s goodness.

Maybe today you can sow just one seed and learn to trust him more.
