I Trust You

Psalms 31:14 (ESV) says, “But I am trusting you, O Lord, saying, “You are my God!”

At first glance, we might think this verse comes out of a beautiful Psalm about the goodness of God. We might think the surrounding verses talked about God’s grace, love, and provision. It is the exact opposite.

David wrote this Psalm in the middle of an intense trial. All of the 13 verses leading up to our verse for the day are about the danger that David is facing. They outline the challenges, opposition, and chaos surrounding him.

He was caught in a hopeless situation. More than a financial struggle, or a missed opportunity, David likely feared for his life when he wrote these words.

What does that tell us about what it means to trust the Lord?

Whether we admit it or not, we are often prone to make our faith comfortable. Yet our God is the victorious God. He is not limited to the environments we can control. The opportunity to trust God only really comes when we let go of control.

Anyone can get a bible and a journal and spend an hour with God on vacation, but what about when life get’s crazy? I’m not saying we need to make sure we always spend an hour with God. I’m saying faith is far more than cozy devotional moments in the morning.

While times of devotion are formative for our relationship with God, our trust in him has to go beyond controlled environments.

When was the last time you felt severe danger? Where did your hope go?

Praise God that we can testify that he is our God in any trial!

The power of stealing away for moments with God is displayed when our faith is tested. My prayer is that the next time you face a trial you cannot overcome, you will overflow with trust and have a heart that says, “You are my God!”

Start today by trusting in him while you say, “You are my God.” Maybe you want to take a few moments and pray those words a few more times, asking the Holy Spirit to help you have greater trust in the Lord. God will use this moment to prepare you for what is ahead.
