Open My Eyes
Abiding opens the door for deep connection with God the Father, supernatural empowerment from the Holy Spirit, and transformational love for Jesus. The more we surrender, the more we gain because gaining him is all that matters. I consider this morning that the journey of abiding is taking the risk of surrender to experience God’s goodness to eventually desiring surrender.
Psalm 119:18 (ESV) says, “Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.” Even when we are already in prayer—already abiding—there is a more profound desire that comes to us to know more about God.
I love this verse because it shows me that so much of advancing my faith is built on asking God for help.
As I see it, we start our faith journey without knowing God and not knowing what to ask for. We may have experienced something about God’s love or forgiveness, but overall our desires are not aligned with the truth of God’s word. With so much yet to learn about the Christian faith, the only thing we know to ask is for God to transform our desires.
The snapshot of a new believer is an excellent example of what every day is like for us in the kingdom. We have a bit of a disadvantage if we have an overload of religious training. It makes us feel like we do not have anything more to learn about God. We think we can only be teachers, but Jesus warned about that when talking with Nicodemus in John 3:10 ESV saying, “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things?”
If you know much about Christianity, this prompt is especially for you. When is the last time you opened God’s word and humbly asked him to open your eyes? I’m not saying when did you pray the proper prayer. When was the last time you came to spend time with him and were genuinely hungry to know more about him?
This is an essential foundation of abiding. This is the child-like curiosity and dependence we need to continue to grow in our faith.
Would you search your heart this morning and see if there is a hidden desire for his word? You can ask the Lord for an increased desire. Let Psalm 119:18 be a springboard into seeking him more.
