Mornings With God

Psalms 5:3 NLT says, “Listen to my voice in the morning, Lord. Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly.”

With my rhythm of grad school and life, our family takes Mondays as slowly as possible. Morning is usually around 10:00 on our Monday Sabbath. Mornings provide a perfect space in our lives to seek God. This verse from Psalms is a fascinating window into the long history of how people seek God. I keep getting glimpses of how big God is. How many millions or billions of people have sought God every morning, and for how many years?

God has been faithful to listen and respond to every one of those prayers—trillions of requests. We know he does not always answer in the way we want, but he is faithful to engage with all our prayers. God is well-prepared to help you in your need. How many countless ways has God provided for his people throughout history? If we can get ahold of the truth that the God we are praying to today is the same God who has answered every prayer for thousands of generations, what would that do to our faith?

It would undoubtedly increase our expectations for what God could do. No wonder the psalmist waits expectantly. They are coming before the God of the universe! It is an exciting and awe-inspiring privilege to pray to God with this much power. Not only that, he is a good God.

I’m just connecting the dots this morning. Our faith can greatly increase when we combine the truth of God’s immense power and faithfulness with the depth of his love. His ultimate demonstration of this love was on the cross when he gave his son to be a ransom for the whole world.

I know there are significant needs right now. Our family has some huge needs and requests. It is easy to be filled with anxiety and fear when we think about the impossible things, but God is not intimidated in the least by our requests. We won’t always get an immediate yes. That is not how it works. God is not a genie in a bottle that grants us our every wish. However, we can know that he is present in our prayers. We can see that he wants to work in our lives the best way possible. We can understand that his wisdom is beyond measure and that he already knows what we need. We can trust him.

I encourage you to bring before him your requests, hopefully with increased faith, and wait expectantly. Part of faith is the posture that says, “I don’t know what God is going to do, but I can’t wait to find out what it is!”
