The Lord’s Delight
“No, the Lord’s delight is in those who fear him, those who put their hope in his unfailing love.”
Over the last several months, the idea of the fear of the Lord has come up. It is a concept that is not always discussed in Christian circles. When we do talk about it, I’m not sure we go after the depth of what it means. There are so many promises to those who fear the Lord, and this verse shows us something special.
To fear the Lord is akin to hoping in his unfailing love. Maybe it is difficult to draw a line between these two concepts, so that is what we are after today.
The fear of the Lord begins with a clear awareness that God is God. It is called the fear of the Lord because God is so powerful, pure, and divine. Our only response is to have a sense of awe when confronted with such majesty.
I think the fear of the Lord also begins when we stop seeing God as someone or something that benefits us and start coming to grips with the reality that whether we like it or not, he is God. The fear of the Lord has a way of detaching God from our limited views of religion. It unboxes God and positions us rightly before him.
Can you see this today? This God exists outside of time and space. He is glorious and filled with splendor. He is unbeatable—a warrior (Exodus 15:3). We have to begin our approach to God from this place of reverence. Otherwise, we will think too little of him.
When we see God this way, we might be stunned at first by his might, but we will soon be overwhelmed with the measure of his peace, goodness, and love. God is all of these things, perfectly in harmony.
God delights in people who fear him and hope in his unfailing love. I am challenging you today to press in after the fear of the Lord because in that place is a truer awareness of God’s love.
