What Does God Know?
“What does God know?” they ask. “Does the Most High even know what’s happening?”
Have you ever been here? Psalm 73 is an honest testimony of someone who has been confused about what God is doing. Have you ever been perplexed by the fact that the wicked seem to gain all that they want? That is what Psalm 73 is all about.
It is unavoidable that many people have made tremendous gains through evil schemes—even people claiming to do so in the name of religion.
If any of us were made aware of God’s presence and truth, we would be terrified at the thought of doing evil. Not because we do not want to offend God or be punished, but because we would see clearly that his ways are life, and any other path is destruction. So we see that evil occurs because people either deny God’s existence or believe that God is blind to their activity.
That could not be farther from the truth. God knows what is going on, but sometimes he chooses to be silent. Psalms 50:21 NLT shares this thought, saying, “While you did all this, I remained silent, and you thought I didn’t care. But now I will rebuke you, listing all my charges against you.”
We don’t want to be deceived into thinking God’s silence is based on his apathy. The path to wickedness begins with the absence of God’s presence. Without him guiding us and surrendering to his ways, we might think that God doesn’t even know what’s happening. We might believe that he doesn’t care. If we do not regularly come before the Lord in humility, we become desensitized to the gift of his presence and open the door for little compromises.
I want to be close enough to God to feel the weight of every temptation to sin. I want to be close enough to God that I know his thoughts about me and that I am compelled into a life of righteousness through his grace. This lifestyle is only sustained when we live close to God.
This is where the writer of Psalm 73 ends up. Psalms 73:17 NLT says, “Then I went into your sanctuary, O God, and I finally understood the destiny of the wicked.” It was not until the writer came back into God’s presence that the issue was cleared up.
Today we get to enter God’s presence through prayer and seeking him in his word. Let us live close to him so that we do not fall into the trap of thinking that God is absent from our lives.
