God Is My Helper
Psalm 54:4 ESV says, “Behold, God is my helper, the Lord is the upholder of my life.”
This psalm is about how God is faithful to deliver David from his enemies. David often ran for his life before becoming the king of Israel, and it was no better after he became king! He understood firsthand the delivering power of God.
What made David a man after God’s heart was how he trusted in God. He experienced God’s saving hand from his childhood as a shepherd to his legacy years as king.
It is no exaggeration when David claims that God is the upholder of his life.
Language like this can be hard to grasp without experiences of God’s deliverance. It sounds good and might make us feel good, but how can we say God upholds our life if there is no evidence of this? For most people, that is based on the fact that we live relatively easy lives—easy in the sense that most of us are not on the run from armies hunting us down.
Comfort is one of the greatest opponents of faith, and we need to be careful not to allow ease and self-preservation to creep into our perception of following God. I’m not saying God desires a hard life for us, but I am saying that life's challenges can become joy-filled opportunities to see God move.
The way of the kingdom is built on surrender. There’s no way around it. God gives his Holy Spirit freely and offers the gifts of the spirit at no cost, but maturity comes through the trials. I want to say with more and more conviction each day that God is the upholder of my life, but to do so I have to give up more areas of my life to God’s power.
I wonder how this would challenge you today. What percentage of your day-to-day life is God upholding? What parts are you taking care of yourself? Realize that God desires to be your full support and help. He wants your surrender and trust so that he can do what you never thought possible through your life.
Take the risk today to ask God to increase your faith… knowing that you are requesting challenges and trials. God will reveal himself in those situations in supernatural ways, and you will be growing on the journey of abiding.
