Psalm 19:10 | Sweeter Than Honey

Psalm 19:10 ESV says, “More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.”

This chapter of Psalms describes the perfection and supremacy of God’s word and law—not just as a good religion but as the very nature of creation and the universe. It is a sweeping declaration of God’s divinity, and believing this is becoming increasingly counter-cultural.

My favorite thing about Psalm 19 is how it boldly draws the line. Reading through verses 7-11 is a convicting description of who God is. It challenges us to the core of our hearts whether or not we believe that God is God and that his ways are true.

And that is why it is critical to abide with these verses at the center.

Reading a verse like Psalm 19:10 is easy to glance over, but what is happening in your heart and soul? Is there a strong agreement? A wary curiosity? Do you cringe at the thought of God’s law being like precious gold? Are you caught up in longing for more of God’s law?

It is worth asking ourselves.

To abide with these verses is to come before the Lord and wait. It means reading and reciting these verses and asking God to help you understand them. God has often opened my eyes to a truth I could not see in verses that I knew well.

Abiding is a slow and often arduous process. We must confront everything inside our hearts that is not of the Lord. We cannot assume that we are good to go just because we know God. However, we can rely on the truth that if we know God and have received the fire of the Holy Spirit, we are not alone in our pursuit of holiness and unity with God. God is faithful to empower and equip us to experience freedom.

Some of you will have difficulty figuring out how God’s laws can be desirable. You will be okay with the rules being true, but this level of heart connection is foreign. Others may have an experience of this revelation, but we all have an invitation to grow more aware of the perfection and attractiveness of God’s ways.

I don’t sense that God is in much of a hurry with this. Religion calls us to put on a show and get everything in order quickly. Faith in God depends on God’s ability to restore, compel, and transform us, and he does that at the pace necessary for thorough work. Surrender to God’s timing and allow the focus to be abiding and being open with the Lord.
