Living Worthy
We often sing songs about God being worthy. It is a common term in Christianity, but what is it all about?
Often when I go to write the devotional, I start with a word. Today it was worthy. I like to search through the scriptures for instances of this word by quickly searching on the Bible app.
I found it interesting how many verses were about what we feel we are not worthy of. Like this verse from the parable of the prodigal son in Luke 15:19 ESV, the son says to the father, “I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.”
Jesus even said in Matthew 10:38 ESV, “And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.” The cost of following Christ is high. Clearly, without something changing, we are simply unworthy of following God.
This is the world Jesus came into. And even though Pilot found no reason to think he was worthy of death at the end of his life, he did exactly what he called his followers to do. He denied his life, took up his cross, and gave it all.
And what was the result?
Because Jesus took our place on the cross, we get to access the power of the Holy Spirit to live a life of freedom and holiness that was previously impossible.
Now Paul can write to us and call us to a new standard. In Ephesians 4:1 ESV, he says, “I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called.”
The truth is that through the Holy Spirit, we don’t have to have a mindset that says, “I’m not worthy.”
Because Jesus was worthy, he makes us worthy. We can step into the intimacy of God’s presence and stand before him confidently because we know that we have been called to a life of freedom. And that makes us worthy of being called children of God.
