Psalm 1:2 | Day and Night
Psalm 1:1-2 ESV says, “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.”
Something powerful happens when we learn to delight in the law of the Lord. If we only look at the second half of this verse, we see religion. Meditating on the Bible day and night is a strenuous task! There are very few things (even great things) that we want to do constantly.
When we only have a view of religion, we will give up on any goal like this. We will conclude that no one could possibly attain this standard and just do our best.
What if we viewed our time in the Bible, prayer, worship, and kingdom service as a springboard into continual prayer and abiding and not just boxes to check off? What if we got the heart of Psalm 1 and realized that it isn’t a chore to abide but a privilege and an honor?
What if abiding in the presence of God through his word and by his spirit was the way we were created? What if this was the most fulfilling way to live life?
I can confidently say that the greatest areas of personal failure and wandering came when I failed to delight in the law of the Lord.
There is a very real battle going on in the spiritual realm. A war that we cannot win outside of the presence of the Holy Spirit, the love of the Father, and the power of the name of Jesus. Spending time daily in the word of God is a safeguard for our salvation and life. But our faith multiplies when we long for continual communion with the Lord.
We all have room to grow in this. But perhaps today, we can start turning our hearts toward God anew. Maybe we can read these verses and begin longing for greater delight and joy in God’s word.
