Psalm 36:2 | An Honest Look
Psalm 36:2 ESV says, “For he flatters himself in his own eyes that his iniquity cannot be found out and hated.”
Ouch.
Pride and self-obsession have a way of masking the brokenness in our hearts. Does this sound familiar? Anyone on social media can see endless posts of people glorifying themselves, yet this is often a mask for deeper hurt.
We don’t like to confront our brokenness. Have you ever come face to face with your iniquity? It might feel like the world is spinning around you or caving in when you have to stare at the ugliness of the sin that has a root in your heart.
Our remedy for sin is building a fantasy. Maybe you remember a football coach from high school or a band director living out their unrealized dreams vicariously through their teams. That is a picture of what this verse is saying. When we can’t come to grips with our inner world, the good and the bad, we tend to build a false narrative for ourselves.
The word of God teaches us just how dangerous this can be. So what is the solution? The fear of the Lord. Proverbs 15:33 ESV says, “The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor.” This word of wisdom is almost the exact opposite of Psalm 36:2.
The path of the godly is the fear of the Lord and humility. When we have this posture, we can let the light of Christ shine on our hearts and expose everything that is not of heaven.
So how will you respond to this today? I know it is no small thing to take a serious look at our hearts, but this is the path to maturity and freedom. God will give you grace and confidence to walk in the fear of the Lord and live in his peace. Come before him in prayer, ask him to open your eyes, take a posture of humility, and respond to his word.
Amen.
