Deuteronomy 30:11-14 | God is Near

Today’s passage is a bit longer than usual. It reminds us that God is near.

Deuteronomy 30:11-14 ESV says, “For this commandment that I command you today is not too hard for you, neither is it far off. It is not in heaven, that you should say, ‘Who will ascend to heaven for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’ Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’ But the word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it.”

You can do this.

You can follow God today! He has made his commands and his ways accessible to all of us.

If God could say this bold promise to the Israelites thousands of years ago, how much more can we rely on this word through the Holy Spirit that lives within us? God has not only assured us of his truth in our lives, but he has provided the very presence of his Spirit to empower us to live in freedom.

I wonder why we fall into the trap of believing that God is far away? His word is nearer than we could imagine. When we wake up in the morning, his word is with us. In our coming and our going, he is near.

I am reminded today that God is only near us because he wants to be. He does not have to entertain us or serve us in any way. He is God, and we are not. Yet his love and his goodness have driven him to pursue us daily. Can you believe that? God wants to get to know you. He wants to deliver his truth into your soul. He doesn’t want it to be a secondary source. No, he wants to write his word on your heart.

Today I encourage you. God is not far off. This command to follow God is not too hard for you. It is near to your heart.

God is with us.

Amen.
