1 Samuel 17:45 | VICTORY THROUGH FAITH
1 Samuel 17:45 ESV says, “Then David said to the Philistine, ‘You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.’”
The story of David and Goliath has become such an integral part of Christian education that we might forget the actual intensity of the story. Thousands of years later, we know the outcome. We know that God delivered David and the whole nation of Israel.
But what about in the moment?
When David got to the camp, no one had hope of victory. The army was stalling on their side of the valley. Afraid to think about what might happen if they tried to stand up to the giant warrior taunting them.
So how much less faith would they have had in David? Whether it was youthful recklessness or faith, David saw the situation differently. It says that he ran to the battleline to meet Goliath.
David had a different perspective on the situation. His logic was that if he could fight a lion and a bear, God could also give him this victory.
It wasn’t a show-off moment. David had entered into a real war. A real enemy was seeking to fight and kill the Israelites. This was a life-or-death situation.
The lesson is that David’s time abiding in God’s presence led him to see multiple supernatural victories while tending the flock. I don’t think the story is that David knew he would beat Goliath. But I think it shows us that when facing a giant, a little faith can be enough to give us the courage to rush to the battle line and declare the bane of Jesus over our situation.
Begin today in the simplicity of abiding by knowing God and seeking him in his word. It will build the foundation of faith for what lies ahead.
