PROVERBS 28:13 | RECIEVING MERCY

Proverbs 28:13 NLT says, “People who conceal their sins will not prosper, but if they confess and turn from them, they will receive mercy.”

Mercy is available for us, but it comes through confession. There’s a verse in Psalms 36 that talks about the tendency of deceived people to hide their iniquity from themselves. The verse says that if they saw their sin, they would hate it.

Hiding in sin is not just about hiding from others. It is about hiding from ourselves. Sin is a trap that catches us and keeps us from freedom. We often stay stuck in patterns of sin because we don’t believe we can ever get free.

God’s mercy is our ticket to freedom. This morning I want us to see that mercy is a promise. Remember Hebrews 4:16 ESV, which says, “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

It doesn’t matter what you’ve done, where you’ve been, or who you think you are; God’s mercy is extended to you.

When we focus on our sins and failures, the problems seem bigger than life. We buy into the lies that say God would never love us again. We start thinking we must go over the top to earn God’s love again, forgetting that Christ paid for our redemption with his precious blood.

Our confession has a way of restoring us to the kingdom reality of forgiveness. When we confess our sin to God, we put it at his feet. Suddenly, we can see that God is far greater than our failures. We catch a glimpse of his remarkable ability to overcome our weaknesses and his power to renew our souls.

When we confess, we reposition ourselves. We see our sin in light of God, not our God in light of our sin. I don’t want to downplay the severity of our sin. Jesus took the full punishment for our transgression on the cross. The price was high, and it was paid fully.

Let us lean into grace today. Looking at Jesus, lay down your sins. Don’t conceal them from yourself and others but surrender them. Receive the promise of mercy and live in the presence and glory of God.
